About the book

My stories reveal the challenges and joys of immigrant life from girlhood to adulthood after having lived on three continents: South America, Europe and North America. They reveal the sometimes painful experiences that go along with finding one’s place in new cultural settings. As a former colonial citizen from British Guiana, 1950s and 1960s life in England, the Mother Country, presented not only lifestyle contrasts but also inner conflicts for me. And as a voluntary Black immigrant from England to the United States, I discovered that Black skin was often the only connection I had with Black Americans. The cultural gap between us was a barrier to any easy adjustment I had imagined about life among them. Ultimately the stew of enlightening, enriching and confounding experiences resulted in my finding my place in the US and thriving here.
